Keep your new baby safe with this child safety checklist.
It is impossible to keep a baby from all harm, but these are a few items that may help reduce serious injury.
-
Use appropriate car seat
Never put a car seat in the passenger seat if an air bag is installed in the car.
-
Block off stairs at top and bottom until a child can navigate the stairs very well,
Use a sturdy gate. Toddlers need to climb, but doing so on the stairs is not safe.
-
Cover outlets
-
If a child is present, use only back stove burners when cooking.
A young child can pull themselves up and touch a hot pan very easily.
-
Give young children very small bite-size food pieces.
Especially foods that may be harder to swallow, such a cheese.
-
Keep all medicine in a child-proof container and out of a child's reach.
Beware when keeping medicine in a purse or diaper bag.
-
Never leave a child alone in a car for any length of time unless the temperature is not hot, you are watching, and the window is down.
-
Use bath tub and infant bath sponge for washing.
It is dangerous to wash an infant in a sink unless you are able to hold onto them the whole time. It is much easier to place on a bath sponge in the tub and use a warm wet towel to keep them warm.
-
Change and dress an infant on a padded floor instead of a changing table.
-
Always test food and liquid for temperature before feeding to an infant.
